Just like sperm donation; women can choose to donate their eggs and give opportunity to many who are unable to conceive. The egg donation facility is available at BLK Super Speciality Hospital where a donor’s identity is kept hidden.
What does the screening process involve?
- Egg donor screening- Egg donors go through an initial screening to determine their ability to produce eggs. Only donor applicants who pass the fertility screening steps can be matched with a recipient couple.
- Medical tests- A donor is tested for several factors including blood type, infectious diseases, drug use and overall health.
- Genetic screening- The donor’s family history will be assessed through blood tests to be aware of possible hereditary diseases or genetic disorders like sickle cell anaemia, thalassemia etc.
- Psychological testing- This involves the donor meeting a psychologist to ensure she is aware of the risks and benefits and fully understands what the process entails.
