In case of some diseases like leukemia or thalassemia it starts malfunctioning. It is here, that a bone marrow transplant helps in saving life of a patient. A bone marrow is taken from a donor who’s bone marrow matches with a patients’ and is transplanted through a surgical process. A bone marrow is preferrably taken from a family member.
Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)
Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant refers to transplant of stem cells, which has been very effective in healing chronic & severe diseases. The stem cells, however, can only be taken from a person who has matching genes with patients. Therefore, a donor is always a close family member. The matching of genes is done through human leukocyte antigen or HLA.
A doctor may suggest for an Allogeneic BMT in case of following:
- Metabolic disorders
- Bone Marrow Failure States
